The Gunk In The Garage - Bones S08E03 Recap

A man is being followed at the basement parking of a building. He walks toward his car, when he notice a cup of Ultra Gulp on his car's roof. He reaches for it, and his car explodes, him incinerated in an instant. Blowing up his bits to smithereens.

Bones and Booth argue in the car about which stroller to get for Christine. Brennan gets a call regarding the explosion. Caroline Julian rings Booth as well, however, not about the explosion at the hotel. He then drops Bones at the crime scene instead as he gets back to FBI headquarters to talk to her.

At the scene, they see the bomb explosion and finds his body parts scattered all over the third level of the parking area. The whole team tries to gather as much of his bits as possible for proper identification, brings it to the lab.

While working on the victim's remains, Hodgins find a shard of a propylene plastic, an Ultra Gulp. Hodgins suggest that this may have been used to disguise the bomb that killed the victim. Cam finds a wire and metal fragments in the victim's liver, narrowing down the list of explosive devices that may have possibly killed the vic, and hands it over to Hodgins as well to examine.

Booth returns to his office and sees Caroline at the elevators. He tells her that he's coming with Sweets to the hotel (crime scene) to work on the investigation. Caroline insists that they talk, as the situation is very urgent. Seeley, however, demands that he comes with Sweets as FBI protocol. Julian then calls on a random agent, FBI Special Agent Olivia Sparling (guest star Danielle Panabaker), to come with Sweets instead, taking Booth's place, so they won't have to be held responsible for not following the protocol.

Julian then hands Booth a letter from his boss stating that he'll be in Caroline Julian's supervision until further notice. So Julian declares to Booth that he'll be speaking at the Quarterly Budget Review to justify his department's expenses. As it turns out, they have the highest cost per conviction in the country. Booth refuses to do it, but has no choice upon hearing that a promotion and a raise will be at stake.

Booth discusses with Brennan his future of having a probable desk job at the FBI--and a raise, upon promotion. He tells her that he has to consider it because of Christine and Parker. Their talk was interrupted when Booth sees Sweets coming in the office and he asks about the investigation. He tells him about what happened with his new partner and their quick trip to the crime scene when Angela called. She tells Sweets that she has already ID'd the victim. Sweets then informs Booth and Brennan about it and says goodbye to them. Brennan notices that although he is off the case, Booth seems to be much more interested in it than in his assignment to justify their expenses at the budget review.

Sweets and Agent Sparling arrive at the hotel and talks to the one of the hotel employees. Sweets asks for the security tapes, but the employee refuses. Sparling immediately suspects that he may have something to do with the bombing, considering that he was able to afford a Breitling watch and a pair of Prada shoes at his measly salary. He insists to not say a word and that they get a warrant first before he gives them the tapes. Persistent, Agent Sparling arrests him and tells him that he can just call his lawyer while he's under FBI custody and cuffs him.

The two drives to Bethesda to speak with the victim's wife, informing her of her husband's death. However, her husband comes home and they find out that he's not the victim (obviously!).

After learning that their victim is not the one they just ID'd, they re-examined the skull and Bones notices an anomaly on it. Angela makes the adjustment and finds out that the victim has an identical twin, therefore causing the mistake at the Jeffersonian.

The victim's twin, Robert Carlson, has just found out of his sibling. He explains that he was adopted.
He asks about his brother and Sweets suggest that he may actually be the key into identifying his brother. Sweets thinks that being identical twins, Carlson may have the same views, needs and compulsion based on his characteristics. Sparling is skeptic.

Sweets and Sparling comes to Angela's office and shown the two the narrowed down list of people to find so they can identify the victim. Sparling finds out that Sweets' observation and the data that they have (based on the twin) helped very much in finding who the victim is. She is then convinced that Sweets is remarkable in profiling.

After finding out who the victim is, Dr. Sweets and Agent Sparling heads to the vic's home. While on the way, Sparling has this vibe that Sweets may have been working on his "psychological mojo" on her. He outright dismisses it as she suddenly feels apologetic for underestimating him, being dismissive and being condescending to him. She complements him on how incredible he was in narrowing down the victim pool.

Tracking down Jerry Langela's (the victim) wife, they announce to her the death of her spouse and asks who may have possibly wanted to kill him. They interrogate her of her whereabouts at the time of his death and she tells them of her court-ordered community service, stemming from a road rage. They also ask her of his history with a bookie and finds out he had a gambling problem, and that the person who assaulted him back then is now in jail. Sweets warn her of not leaving town, as she becomes a person of interest on her husband's violent death.

Meanwhile at the lab, Hodgins uses a military apparatus to replicate the explosion so they can re-create the effects that may have had on the victim as well as re-create the bomb, therefore tracking down the bomber. Cam finds out about this and learns about how Hodgins was able to acquire the shock tube. She immediately disapproved of its usage. However, with Bones' testimony, Cam realizes that this may be crucial in solving their case, therefore giving in.

Angela is able to find out where the explosives came from. Bones and Hodgins go to the production facility. They learn that someone broke into the facility a few days prior to the crime and stole a few stuff that were taken. They ask for a list of people who had access at the warehouse where the breaking in happened and they find out that the list was already given to FBI's explosives team who were also on the case.

Angela was able to find the victim in the security camera footage tapes sent by the hotel. They find out that the twins were in the same hotel at the same time, finding out that Carlson must have lied on his alibi.

They bring him over for questioning once more. He tells them that he may have lied about him being at the hotel at the time of his brother's death, but swears that he knows nothing about his twin at that time. He learns that his twin brother was in the symposium at the hotel and that they share the same things--even taste in women. Sweets asks how much he paid for the self-actualization group and he tells them that he's about to give them all that he owns and move to their community in Colorado.

Cam and Bones find more evidence at the blast. They see hair strands and Cam thinks that this may either be a witness or may actually be the bomber. Their call was cut short as Booth calls Cam Saroyan. Bones then tells her that while she's out to help Booth, she'll go check the junction box where the hair strand was found and look for more clues.

Meanwhile, Booth is having a hard time working on his own assignment, that's why he calls for Cam. He asks if she can do it for him as the budget review team is already waiting for him. So she obliges to help Booth with the presentation.

Sweets suspect that if Carlson is ready to give up everything, his wife may have been so pissed that she would want him dead. And so, he calls her in for interrogation. Sweets and Sparling question Carlson's wife. They find out that she withdrew 20 grand from her account and have seen on her hard drive evidence of her trying to find a contract killer, therefore pinning her to the crime. She admits that she did it because her husband was about to screw her with all that they have just to join the self-actualization group. Unfortunately, the killer she hired killed the wrong guy. She also admits that she hasn't paid the killer the other half of the payment because her husband is still alive. And that she'll pay him once her husband gets killed that day.

Sweets tells Booth about the hired killer and Booth suddenly dropped his presentation to the budget review team to help track down Robert Carlson, and possibly the hired killer. He hands Cam his presentation and leaves.

Booth looks for the killer and gives him the description of the killer. Brennan, while talking on the phone with Booth, realizes that the killer is the guy at the demolition company. Booth spots him as he is about to kill Carlson. They used Sweets as a decoy to retrieve the bomb and shoot the killer. Unfortunately, Sweets was also shot, unintentionally by Sparling. Sweets admits to Sparling that amidst the tension, he likes Sparling. He tells her that he's seeing someone, reason why he didn't gave in to his feelings toward her. Sparling, amidst Sweets admission of his feelings and his relationship, she kisses him.

Caroline tells Booth how the presentation went with the budget review and that their budget will be increased. Since Booth wasn't the one who did the presentation, he won't get the promotion.

He discusses it to Bones over dinner and she confesses that she didn't want him to get the promotion because that means they won't be together on assignment anymore. However, she feels bad that he didn't get the job. Booth then admits that he doesn't want the job either, being a "man of action".

The scene ends with the couple discussing about Brennan buying Christine and Booth stuff, with Booth finally giving in to her idea.
